B’nai Mitzvah

Through regular practice in class, students build confidence in Hebrew and prayer leadership in an environment where everyone is encouraged to learn, grow, and succeed. In addition to Hebrew studies, learners explore Jewish history with a focus on the history of antisemitism and the ways Jewish community has always been a powerful response to the challenges our people have faced. They also explore Jewish values, strengthen their Jewish identities, and learn what it means to serve as dugma (examples) and leaders within our school and synagogue community.

Learners also attend Torah study and Shabbat services on Saturday mornings. Torah study classes are taught by the rabbis, and are carefully crafted for this age, including lively discussion, debate, hands-on activities, and other age-appropriate learning experiences that help Torah come alive. Regular participation in Shabbat morning worship is a cornerstone of the program. Students attend services throughout the year, becoming familiar with the liturgy while gaining meaningful opportunities to lead prayers in a supportive setting.

As each student’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah approaches, individualized tutoring with our tutors and rabbis prepares them to chant Torah and Haftarah, lead the congregation in prayer, and deliver a thoughtful d’var Torah. Each student also completes a meaningful mitzvah project, putting Jewish values into action through service to others.

The journey continues after the ceremony. Learners remain connected to their cohort and are encouraged to become mentors, madrichim, and volunteers within JLL and the Temple Menorah community. Our goal is not simply to prepare young people for B’nai Mitzvah, but to inspire a lifelong commitment to Jewish learning, leadership, community, and living Jewishly.
