At Temple Menorah, we believe in an open tent, welcoming all people and offering many different points of connection and community.
Throughout the year, we offer special Shabbat services so that every member and guest can engage in ways that feel holy.
Shabbat Across Menorah
Our beloved SAM (Shabbat Across Menorah) evenings bring the joy and connection of Shabbat off campus. In lieu of traditional services on campus, our members open up their homes to members of our community and guests for Shabbat dinners. It is a wonderful chance to connect with old friends, make new friends, and bring people together.
Family Shabbat Jam
This Shabbat experience features members of our in-house band in a musical service geared toward our youngest members and guests. With a mix of familiar Shabbat songs and more traditional liturgy, the atmosphere at the Family Shabbat Jam is relaxed and joyous. Does your child need to move around? No problem! Have a budding musician? Grab a shaky egg and join the band! All are welcome to this fun and participatory worship experience. The service is followed by a pizza dinner plus Shabbat crafts and experiences (including a bouncer). Please see our Events page for upcoming Shabbat Jam evenings.
Friday Night Lights
Our flagship Friday Night Lights celebration is a community favorite. We open with a musical Kabbalat Shabbat with our house band, featuring joyous and participatory songs to get in the Shabbat mood. Then, participants of all ages choose from a number of Shabbat options to nourish the mind, soul, and body – art projects, games, meditations, dance classes, lectures, and much more. There is always a different array of options in addition to the continuation of the Shabbat service. After that, we gather together for kiddush and either a dinner provided by our BBQ Crew or a lovely Oneg Shabbat.
Barechu and BBQ
We end each summer season with a bang – our annual Barechu and BBQ, during which we set Shabbat liturgy to the tunes of our favorite artists. Past hits include Billy Joel, Elton John, Taylor vs. Taylor (Swift and James), One-Hit Wonders, and many more. After the musical service we enjoy a wonderful dinner provided by our own BBQ Crew. It’s always something new and always a blast.
Community Beach Shabbat
At least once every summer, we move our worship to the beach in partnership with other South Bay synagogues. Bringing in Shabbat on the shore is a magical experience, especially when it helps us connect to the wider South Bay Jewish community. Please check our calendar for this year’s date.
