Temple Menorah Rabbi's Weekly Message
In Response to the Terror in Pittsburgh

Dear Friends,

The past week has been one of disorientation, sadness, anger, mourning and fear. In the aftermath of last Shabbat’s massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, people have been scrambling to make sense out of the senseless hatred. Sadly, hatred in all forms is real. This was cruelly highlighted on Tuesday night when, just down the 405 freeway in Irvine, the synagogue next door to the one I served before coming to Menorah was blotted with graffiti bearing anti-Semitic profanities.

To those of us who care about Jewish life and Jewish lives in particular, and goodness and humanity in general, making sense out of these acts is futile. What we can do, though, is to take comfort in coming together.

That is why across the country, this Shabbat has been deemed “Solidarity Shabbat” and people everywhere are encouraged to #ShowUpForShabbat. I hope that you will join us for one or both of these opportunities to come together to celebrate and find comfort with one another.

  • Solidarity Shabbat – at Congregation Ner Tamid – tomorrow evening at 6:30
  • Shir Shabbat – here at Temple Menorah – Saturday morning at 10:00

There is no Religious School this coming Sunday, so instead, spend Shabbat with your Temple Menorah community, with the Jewish community and with all of the leaders of other faiths who plan to be with us on Friday night to lend their friendship. This weekend is the weekend. This Shabbat is the Shabbat. Be with us. #ShowUpForShabbat!
